Began career in 1972 as a stablehand for a family friend's Standardbred stable at Hollywood Park while attending business and accounting classes at Cal State University, Los Angeles. Was assistant to then-leading trainer Don Ratchford, 1974-75. Went out on his own training Standardbreds in 1978 at the Meadowlands. In 1984, one of his horses, Guts, won nearly $2 million. Returned to Southern California in 1987. Worked for trainer Roger Stein ... Began training Thorougbreds in 1993
Saddled Famous Digger to a neck victory in the 1997 Del Mar Oaks, his first grade I victory. Famous Digger, a $40,000 claim, won stakes under Abrams' care and he sold her in January 1998 for seven figures to Fusao Sekiguchi in Florida ... Comes to his first Breeders' Cup in 2000 with Speaking of Time, a stakes winner for Abrams in 2000 who is cross-entered in the Distaff and the Filly & Mare Turf.
Elected to the Thoroughbred Owners of California Board of Directors in 2005 where he served for over a year. Also named CTBA Trainer of the Year for California in 2005.
